Five Things to Look For When You Are Looking For the Best.
There has been a lot written about helping employers become more attractive to potential employees. We’ve written about it, too. It’s that important. In today’s ultra-competitive hiring environment, an employer must remain staffed and able to perform the work and produce the product to satisfy customer demands.
That means you have to do whatever it takes to get people on your team.
But that doesn’t mean you have to settle. We’ve heard of businesses simply looking for “warm bodies” to fill empty positions. We’ve heard the stories of new hires not showing up for work, sometimes even on “Day 1”. We’ve heard the expensive accounts of training an employee all the way up, only to see them leave unexpectedly, or worse, join the competition. So it may seem like an impossible task to keep your staff fully loaded.
But you don’t have to settle.
When you settle for a “warm body”, you are putting your brand at risk. You’re putting your customer’s satisfaction on notice that sooner or later, something will go wrong. More importantly, you’re giving in to a narrative that simply isn’t true about the next generations’ willingness to work.
At Uni Pro Painting, we are constantly hiring the best and the brightest to help us ramp up to take on new projects and answer customer needs more efficiently. We believe the right people are out there, and we prove it every time we hire the best man or woman for the job.
And here’s who we think they are:
Five characteristics of a great employee:
Passionate:
A great employee will be passionate. Our team members love something about their job. Maybe not about your product or service, at least not yet. But they are passionate about making a difference, or being the best, or helping someone succeed, or getting the job done right. You can train the rest.
Committed:
If you get ghosted by a potential employee, don’t move mountains trying to locate him. A good employee will show up, on time, and prepared. You can afford to wait. It’s worth it. Our best employees are proud to show up, and they do, in a big way.
Positive:
We are proud of our work culture, and you may be too. Realize that a potential employee is likely working somewhere else, and may have had a rough experience. We ask about family and lifestyle and the future because it matters to us. And it matters to our employees. Positivity can be hidden, but it can’t be squelched.
Adaptable:
Our employees love a challenge. They love change when done for good reasons that improve the customer experience. If you have expectations for appearance, timeliness, quality work, etc., don’t be afraid to lay it on the line. Great employees won’t back away.
Family driven:
Work-life balance matters to great employees. When they say they want to be home more, and spend more time with their family, that is a GOOD THING! At Uni Pro Painting, we are family first. That’s good for our employees, and that’s good for business.
